The Greenness of Greenwich has, for about 10 years, been under attack from a local council which combines a short-termist policy with apparent visual insensitivity.

The council seems not to understand the importance, to both inhabitants and visitors, of the blending of grass and trees with the architectural heritage, to make such a place attractive.

In league with money-fixated developers, they have already recently arranged to cram yet another 1,500 or so habitations into this small community area, which simply does not have the necessary infrastructure to support this.

They now propose to cover, with a visually abhorrent-looking development, the last remaining piece of green and open land between the western entrance to Greenwich at the creek bridge and the nearby World Heritage Site.

This plan also involves the demolition of the last remaining Edwardian building in this part of Greenwich which is admired and enjoyed by many.

We feel that although such a development might be useful and even desirable in some contexts, it is entirely inappropriate in a place like Greenwich.

The essence of Greenwich is beauty and charm, which makes it attractive to both residents and visitors.

We ask Ken Livingstone and the Greater London Assembly to prevent this further reduction in the natural amenities of Greenwich.
