Description/History:
Everyday, around the U.S., at slaughterhouses, animals that are unable to stand or walk, are passed for inspection. The workers will shock, kick, hit, and do anything to get the animal "up" so it can walk pass the inspector. As long as it can walk past an inspector, it passes. It can fall down 10 feet from him.. but is already walked passed him and he passed it.

These animals are in excruciating pain.. broken and dislocated joints.. torn ligaments.. diseases.. and more. This is not only SEVERELY INHUMANE.. it causes a threat to humans.. as this meat could be packed with diseases.
Petition:
I am urging everyone to support and sign this petition for the Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act, S. 394/H.R. 661.

This important legislation would prohibit USDA inspectors at slaughterhouses from approving meat from downed animals. Animals sometimes go "down" during their time at slaughterhouses. These animals can't stand or walk, and lie without food, water, and veterinary care for days.. before they are slaughtered, in the most humane ways.

Not only are these practices inhumane, often resulting in bruising, torn ligaments, and broken bones, they pose a major health risk to humans. The risk of tainted meat entering the food chain increases when downed animals are allowed to be slaughtered for human consumption.

This act would provide much needed protection for both livestock and human health.
